Watch this video.

"A new role-playing videogame that is leaving nothing to the imagination."
I would argue that it is movies that leave nothing to the imagination. Games inspire it more so than the blank staring involved in movie or T.V. watching.

"In some parts of this you’ll see full digital nudity."
No.

"…and the ability for the players to engage in graphic sex. And the person who is playing the game gets to decide what’s going to happen between the two people if you know what I mean."
No. They, in all their wisdumb, seem to have confused a high quality role-playing game for low quality Hentai.

"…unless you’re hovering over them every second, they’re going to find ways to see this stuff."
Hasn’t that always been the case? Thanks a lot Dr. Obvious. Your ridiculously high pay has just been earned.

"Critics say Mass Effect is being marketed to kids and teenagers."
With a big fat rating on the front and on each and every advertisement and laws that forbid their sale to those same kids and teenagers.

"If you look at the stastastistics, who’s playing videogames? The adolescent males, not their dad’s."
Where has she been the past 10 years? Have any of these people even heard of the Nintendo Wii? I would like her to cite her "stastastistics."

"We know that all the research shows that violence has a desensitizing effect, well sexuality does too."
I was unaware that this research had been proven beyond the shadow of a doubt. Assuming that her statement about something completely different without a certifiable citation is true, wouldn’t desensitizing children be a good thing for her argument? I think she needs to stop quoting the research of a few arguably dubious results from a convenient selection of colleges searching for publication and do her own. At least playing the damn game like Geoff suggests. How does an individual come in claiming to be a specialist on the topic never having even turned the game on and in fact, scoffing at the slightest suggestion of that possibility?

"…and here’s how they’re seeing women, as these objects of desire as, you know, these hot bodies they don’t show women as being valued for anything other than their sexuality."
Says the woman trying to sell a book with this as the cover.

"…and its a man in this game deciding how many women he wants to be with."
1. It can be a woman.
2. That’s not what it is about or even what happens.

"Darlin’ I gotta go with the research and the research states that there’s a new study out of the University of Maryland right now that says that boys that play videogames cannot tell the difference between what they’re seeing in a videogame and the real world if they don’t have real experience."
Did she really say darlin? Isn’t that sexist? What the heck is going on here? Of course only boys play video games too right? According to the study she’s promoting quite possibly inaccurately. She is suggesting that when kids play videogames, they can’t tell the difference between fantasy or reality. I think she may be right. I am having trouble trying to figure out if she is for real.

"You have to pick up the box and look at the back for the rating and then you have to be involved in what your kids are looking at."
Ok, you just showed everyone how far you have taken your research. You obviously haven’t even picked up the dang box let alone looked at it! The ratings have been right on the front in bold black and white letters as long as I can remember.

The way she says what you have to do to keep your kids safe almost seems like it is hard work. Welcome to parenting.

"I just last week bought Princess Enchanted Brides uh…"
Ok. Last week you say? We are going to rely on the opinion of an individual with such a short term memory? I’ve never heard of a game titled Princess Enchanted Brides. Of course that doesn’t mean he’s ignorant but that also means he isn’t qualified to discuss a topic he obviously knows nothing about. Some people will agree to anything to make an appearance on television.

"Who can argue possibly that, uh, you know, Luke Skywalker meets Debbie Does Dallas is a good thing? It’s not. It’s just not….good."
Wow. Sensationalism at its worst.

"We live in a day and age where are children are not always supervised. It’s not the days of the Playboy Magazine where a lot of moms were home for a majority of the day."
Darn those women’s rights. Now they are working and they can’t be home for a majority of the day taking care of children. Seriously, is this news to these people?

"What do you think a young boy’s gonna do? ‘I wanna play my dad’s videogame while he’s not here.’ I think that’s dangerous and we really have to watch this."
You really have to watch EVERYTHING your kid gets into. You can lock the child out of playing any game with a rating you don’t approve of. Or lock the dang 360 away. If you consider it as dangerous as a gun then lock it away. Ultimately it is STILL up to the parent to take that action.

"I’m not sure why it didn’t get an adults only rating…and this made me feel old watching this what happened to Atari and Pinball and Pac-man."
If any of these uninformed, over-paid "I don’t understand how they obtained a college degree," automatons had bothered to spend a full minute doing even the least bit of research they would know that those three things she mentioned are STILL there. To this day, you can still pick up Atari games. Both Pinball and Pac-man games are also readily available on most consoles.

Riddled with fallacies, logic errors and occasionally complete fabrications, this is unfortunately the norm and not the exception among the spoiled rich and ignorant. Remember, these are probably the same people that pay $150 for Best Buy to install their offspring’s consoles.

As a final comment I must add that it is telling by the “unbiased” moderator’s admission that she “swore off” videogames until this Christmas (like one would an addictive and damaging drug like nicotine, alcohol or caffeine) that it will be a long time before videogame players are accurately and realistically portrayed and represented in the general media and government offices.

I hereby announce my candidacy for ambassador to the sensationalists and fabricators at Fox News.

Traveller’s Tales is currently working their magic on the always exploitable Batman series.

A major part of what made the Lego: Star Wars series so endearing was the fact that they were reenacting scenes we are all familiar with.  They could speak without speaking, so to spek.  (Jar-Jar nod.)  When you think of The Bat too many things come to mind.

I created a little table to explain myself.

GOOD

BAD

Classic Batman comic books.

Horrible late 70’s Super Friends Batman.

Great mid 90’s Batman: The Animated Series.

Horrible late 90’s Batman: Beyond.

Cool Tim Burton Batman.

Idiotic non Tim Burton Sequels.

Batman (puckered) Begins.

Unintentionally Funny Batman TV Series.

Point is, there isn’t really any one Batman story to follow.  Can they create the same personality they did so perfectly in the Star Wars series with such a huge and varied selection of source material?

Another concern I have has to do with the enemies.  Just as important as the hero are the villains.  This is a big reason why I wasn’t a big fan of the "Amazing" Spiderman.  I just wasn’t sold on Sandman and Doctor Octopus.  The Goblin was IMHO their best creation and probably why he had a part throughout the entire series.  Other than Lex Luthor I think the Superman villains are a joke.

Why So Serious?

Batman DOES have some of the greatest villains ever devised, (Croc excluded.)  Add to that the fact that he is a simple, albeit horribly traumatized, vigilante.  It isn’t as much a stretch as say, an extra-terrestrial or a magical lantern.

From the screen shots it seems as if they are creating a mix of everything we have seen so far.  Character designs show inspiration from the T.V. shows, movies and comic books.  The only in-game screenshot appears to be the one below.

BatClimb

The others appear to be taken from cutscenes.  Sure you will probably be able to play as those characters like you can in the other games but without LightSabers or Force Powers, how are you going to attack and defend yourself with those stubby little arms?

In either case it seems they have been able to recycle some of the old Lego pieces they had laying around from the previous series and it also appears they are recycling some of the game mechanics like the occasionally tiresome object collecting.

Scaredy Cat

I adored the Star Wars series and although I think Lego: Batman will prove a fun distraction, I will not be paying $50 this time around.  Unless of course they do X-Men.  After all, 10 superheroes are better than 1!

If you win of course!

Just register (for free spam) at thatgamecalledrez.com for a chance to win one of 50 download codes for the title on XBox Live Arcade.  Hey, I’m never one to snub my nose at a free game.  Unless of course it has Yaris in the title.

I never played the first game so I want to see what all the talk is about.  I will be honest, it doesn’t look that great to me from the screens so far.  I enjoy your occasional brainless shooter but not the acid trip inspired art direction.

Not intentionally trying to be a sensationalist, I must admit that I don’t like this “N guy” all that much.  He seems to have gained the public adoration after sticking it to “the man” with his bet against Jay Allard back in 2004.  Call it hating, call it jealousy, call it whatever you want, I just don’t like N’Gai Croal.

I don’t usually agree with him and I don’t like the way he writes.  Sure I know I’m not a Peabody winner myself but sometimes you can’t really read his stuff without pausing and trying to figure out what his original point was.  A big fan of the comma myself, I realized whilst reading his article that we should limit its use and that of its close friend the parentheses whenever possible.

It seems as though the gaming community has accepted this gai simply because he has apparently broken into the mainstream media by getting a job reporting on video games with Newsweek magazine.  He had a guest appearance on the 1Up Yours podcast during which the regulars were quick to break out the kneepads.  Although well spoken, I still didn’t agree with many of the things he had to say. Perhaps I don’t feel like he has paid his dues.

This opinion of him didn’t form until after I had read some of the stuff he has written and listened to him speak on 1Up Yours. I am not a fan of the N’Gai club.  I Am I alone here?

Site UpdatesJanuary 9, 2008 8:53 pm

Hello,

If you are reading this then I can honestly say that I am completely surprised.  You won’t find anything worthwhile for now.  I am just testing the capabilities of this hosting site.  I had a website which I used to maintain myself but I don’t have time for it anymore.  It used to cost me $100 a year for unlimited bandwidth and it was a lot of fun when I had the time to maintain it.

I don’t want to spend that money if I can’t compete with the millions of full-time bloggers out there.  I have a full-time job and have many projects to attend to at home as well as many time consuming hobbies.  I DO believe I have something new to offer but am afraid it will get lost in the torrential downpour of crap there is out there.

So I will play around here, for free.  If I like it I will stick around and if I don’t I will delete it straight away.

According to Kotaku, Darth Vader and Yoda have been confirmed to be playable characters in the next and final iteration of the Soul Calibur franchise.  No definitive word on whether there will be any more hidden Star Wars characters.  I would imagine Darth Maul would be an easy favorite.

SC4-Vader

I expected as much of Dead or Alive, not a stranger to special guest stars of Spartic proportions.  Soul Calibur’s non-sensical "storyline" is even stranger than the gobbledegook in Dead or Alive.  Neither have any ties to reality I suppose but I always imagined Soul Calibur as the spiritual successor to Eternal Champions as far as storyline is concerned.  Some sort of an afterlife battle.

Tekken, surprisingly enough with its fighting (harassment) Panda’s, is now the most "realistic" fighting game.  A worldwide fighting tournament is a valid excuse for bringing all the world’s greatest fighter’s together.

Soul Calibur?  Fighter’s from a galaxy far, far away?  With force powers in a game that is known for its swordplay not fireballs?  No choke move fatalities, no lightning.  I think they should just redo Masters of the Teras Kasi using a successful fighting engine and a well known development studio.  Do the game justice.

SC4-Yoda

A Star Wars fighting game COULD be fun, if done right.
