"A new role-playing videogame that is leaving nothing to the imagination."
I would argue that it is movies that leave nothing to the imagination. Games inspire it more so than the blank staring involved in movie or T.V. watching.
"In some parts of this you’ll see full digital nudity."
No.
"…and the ability for the players to engage in graphic sex. And the person who is playing the game gets to decide what’s going to happen between the two people if you know what I mean."
No. They, in all their wisdumb, seem to have confused a high quality role-playing game for low quality Hentai.
"…unless you’re hovering over them every second, they’re going to find ways to see this stuff."
Hasn’t that always been the case? Thanks a lot Dr. Obvious. Your ridiculously high pay has just been earned.
"Critics say Mass Effect is being marketed to kids and teenagers."
With a big fat rating on the front and on each and every advertisement and laws that forbid their sale to those same kids and teenagers.
"If you look at the stastastistics, who’s playing videogames? The adolescent males, not their dad’s."
Where has she been the past 10 years? Have any of these people even heard of the Nintendo Wii? I would like her to cite her "stastastistics."
"We know that all the research shows that violence has a desensitizing effect, well sexuality does too."
I was unaware that this research had been proven beyond the shadow of a doubt. Assuming that her statement about something completely different without a certifiable citation is true, wouldn’t desensitizing children be a good thing for her argument? I think she needs to stop quoting the research of a few arguably dubious results from a convenient selection of colleges searching for publication and do her own. At least playing the damn game like Geoff suggests. How does an individual come in claiming to be a specialist on the topic never having even turned the game on and in fact, scoffing at the slightest suggestion of that possibility?
"…and here’s how they’re seeing women, as these objects of desire as, you know, these hot bodies they don’t show women as being valued for anything other than their sexuality."
Says the woman trying to sell a book with this as the cover.
"…and its a man in this game deciding how many women he wants to be with."
1. It can be a woman.
2. That’s not what it is about or even what happens.
"Darlin’ I gotta go with the research and the research states that there’s a new study out of the University of Maryland right now that says that boys that play videogames cannot tell the difference between what they’re seeing in a videogame and the real world if they don’t have real experience."
Did she really say darlin? Isn’t that sexist? What the heck is going on here? Of course only boys play video games too right? According to the study she’s promoting quite possibly inaccurately. She is suggesting that when kids play videogames, they can’t tell the difference between fantasy or reality. I think she may be right. I am having trouble trying to figure out if she is for real.
"You have to pick up the box and look at the back for the rating and then you have to be involved in what your kids are looking at."
Ok, you just showed everyone how far you have taken your research. You obviously haven’t even picked up the dang box let alone looked at it! The ratings have been right on the front in bold black and white letters as long as I can remember.
The way she says what you have to do to keep your kids safe almost seems like it is hard work. Welcome to parenting.
"I just last week bought Princess Enchanted Brides uh…"
Ok. Last week you say? We are going to rely on the opinion of an individual with such a short term memory? I’ve never heard of a game titled Princess Enchanted Brides. Of course that doesn’t mean he’s ignorant but that also means he isn’t qualified to discuss a topic he obviously knows nothing about. Some people will agree to anything to make an appearance on television.
"Who can argue possibly that, uh, you know, Luke Skywalker meets Debbie Does Dallas is a good thing? It’s not. It’s just not….good."
Wow. Sensationalism at its worst.
"We live in a day and age where are children are not always supervised. It’s not the days of the Playboy Magazine where a lot of moms were home for a majority of the day."
Darn those women’s rights. Now they are working and they can’t be home for a majority of the day taking care of children. Seriously, is this news to these people?
"What do you think a young boy’s gonna do? ‘I wanna play my dad’s videogame while he’s not here.’ I think that’s dangerous and we really have to watch this."
You really have to watch EVERYTHING your kid gets into. You can lock the child out of playing any game with a rating you don’t approve of. Or lock the dang 360 away. If you consider it as dangerous as a gun then lock it away. Ultimately it is STILL up to the parent to take that action.
"I’m not sure why it didn’t get an adults only rating…and this made me feel old watching this what happened to Atari and Pinball and Pac-man."
If any of these uninformed, over-paid "I don’t understand how they obtained a college degree," automatons had bothered to spend a full minute doing even the least bit of research they would know that those three things she mentioned are STILL there. To this day, you can still pick up Atari games. Both Pinball and Pac-man games are also readily available on most consoles.
Riddled with fallacies, logic errors and occasionally complete fabrications, this is unfortunately the norm and not the exception among the spoiled rich and ignorant. Remember, these are probably the same people that pay $150 for Best Buy to install their offspring’s consoles.
As a final comment I must add that it is telling by the “unbiased” moderator’s admission that she “swore off” videogames until this Christmas (like one would an addictive and damaging drug like nicotine, alcohol or caffeine) that it will be a long time before videogame players are accurately and realistically portrayed and represented in the general media and government offices.
I hereby announce my candidacy for ambassador to the sensationalists and fabricators at Fox News.
